Ha. I just spent literally five minutes wondering where the other half of my mandarin went, and whether it had possibly rolled off my lap and under the furniture. Baffled sifting through mandarin peel in case I had somehow overlooked it, down on my knees peering under things...

(I ate it while I wasn't looking.)

(I think.)

Also, meme time! Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you. [livejournal.com profile] active_apathy gave me cookery, Guildenstern, writing, librarianism, and blues )

There are many little things I've been meaning to post - photos of the Great Bunny-Stalking Expedition, fic recs from Yuletide and links to how to dye yarn using just Kool-Aid (no mordant needed!) - but I am le tired, so it is time for a meme:

Grab the book nearest you. Right now. Turn to page 56. Find the fifth sentence. Post that sentence along with these instructions in your LiveJournal. Don't dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.

But if you can't take the heat and you lose control, you lose absolutely everything else too.
--The Sacred Book of the Werewolf, Victor Pelevin.

(I enjoyed this novel quite a bit - it's translated from Russian, and reminded me a little of William Gibson without being anything like his stuff at all. Wonderfully dry humour. A Chinese werefox, Russian werewolves, philosophy and the Russian psyche and transformations of many kinds!)

Only coding laziness (and the crippling Gauntlet guilt mentioned in the previous post) has stopped me from putting up the results of that wikipedia band-and-album meme that's been going around. And then some bright spark makes an auto-generator at The Surrealist. So:

My band is Axel Brass and our new album is List of Roman Gladiator Types.

  1. Doomriders
  2. Bible Society NSW
  3. The Library Quarterly
  4. MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video
  5. Chris Brooker
  6. Hazing
  7. Claudio Tognolli
  8. Delegation pattern
  9. River Awbeg
  10. Jay Caufield
  11. Juan Bautista Gaona
  12. John Pitts
  13. Hole in the Wall Gang
  14. New Hampshire Route 103
  15. Janet L. Holmgren

This was autogenerated from random Wikipedia article names. Get your own Wikipedia Album.

Now that's one sweet album. I do have a soft spot, however, for the band name I got the first time I saw this meme and headed over to wikipedia: Roman Catholic Diocese of Wagga Wagga (we would, of course, be known as RCD).

Murrhaha! How are you gentlemen!

First up, the lolcat meme. Apparently, I am Longcat )

Longcat and Tacgnol face off! (is anyone else reminded of the Death Eater/Order of the Phoenix fights in the latest Harry Potter movie?)

And for those of you who've never come across it, the Kitty Cat Dance. Less annoying than Badger Badger Badger, slightly less earworming than Magical Trevor.

Kbai!

Ah, memes. They're like the duct tape of lj (yes, they have a dark side and a light side etc etc). The somewhat inaccurately titled Three things about me that you may not have known:

Three jobs I have had in my life:
1. Local newspaper run
2. Salesthing at Grace Bro's during Christmas/New Year/etc. I think I still have an allergic reaction to certain Christmas carols, particularly as reproduced by tinny automatic Santas, trains or reindeer.
3. Cox for recreational rowing (I know, you're thinking: that can be a job?! The answer is "Yes! There was money involved! Under the table money! :D")

Three places I have lived:
1. Sydney, Australia
2. Sydney, Australia
3. Syd Goulburn!...Australia

Three TV shows I like to watch:
1. Doctor Who
2. The Colbert Report
3. Spicks and Specks

[Bonus Question: Three shows I would like to be watching (grumble, grumble):
1. The Dresden Files
2. Dexter
3. Burn Notice]

Three places I have been on holiday for whatever reason (honestly, *only* holidays?):
1. Hawaii
2. Thailand
3. Poland

Three of my favourite foods:
1. Dark, dark chocolate
2. Welsh rarebit/rabbit
3. Homemade bolognaise

Three places I would rather be right now:
Actually, I like where I am right now, thanks. :D

I'm not much into tagging, but if you feel like doing this meme, consider yourself tagged!

When you see this post, quote from Doctor Who on your LJ.

"There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea's asleep and the rivers dream, people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, and somewhere else the tea is getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do." (Seventh Doctor, Survival)

Rationing posts doesn't work. I get busy/lazy/distracted, and suddenly there's about thirty things either out of date or too random to post on their own. So here is Daikaiju Post, come to crush all before it:

(Now with deadly exclamation point attack!)

1. If you were ever wondering who to blame (or praise) for semicolons: Aldus Manutius!

2. A Dinosaur Comics that fills me with unholy glee: Wheirwolf!

3. Advice from Kurt Vonnegut: Sit up straight!
(EDIT: or not? As [livejournal.com profile] dievle points out, it's very similar to the "wear sunscreen" speech misattributed to him. Nigeria-419-esque mutation of myth, or intentional pastiche by the man himself?)

4. LOLcats meets literary pastiche (sadly, no macros - text only): a Making Light thread!

Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock:
I can has peach?
O HAI MERMAIDZ! kbai :(

5. Doctor Who crossover (utter crack!fic): The Comedie of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark!

MARCELLUS
Is it not like a credenza made of wood?

HORATIO
As thou art to thyself:
And yet it is not in my ken
That such appointments of furnishing
Should, wailing music ne'er heard by ears of men,
Be poiséd thus upon the icy air.
'Tis strange.

6. Calming, yet oh so addictive: Boomshine!

6a. Supernatural fic rec (read this *after* playing the damned game): Boomshine.

7. And finally: the three interests/three icons meme from [livejournal.com profile] lyrstzha! Just comment if you'd like to merge with the Hive Mind do the meme.

Right. I'm back, I think.

Have spent the past few weeks wandering around feeling like something (or rather, sixteen someones) is missing. Have caught up on sleep missed during Clarion South, have scratched the cooking bug, have looked vaguely at my piles of critted manuscripts and thought, "gee, better start revising...". (Have nearly finished revising week six's story). Have read. Have written Stuff. Have caught up on the ungodly "skip four hundred-and-something" flist.

As is abundantly clear, I am a terrible procrastinator when it comes to actually *writing* [livejournal.com profile] clarionfishy. It's on the list, but it's not high priority.

Soon: Photo picspam of pretty, pretty flowers. Icons. The usual rambling.

Now: Meme ganked from [livejournal.com profile] megpie71:

YOU'RE ON MY FRIENDS LIST, I WANNA KNOW YOU... I want to know 34 things about you. I don't care if we never talk, never liked each other, or if we already know everything about each other. Short and sweet is fine... I just wanna know you better! Thanks! =)

1. Can you cook?
2. What was your dream growing up?
3. What talent do you wish you had?
4. Favorite place?
5. Favorite vegetable?
6. What was the last book you read?
7. What zodiac sign are you?
8. Any tattoos and/or piercings?
9. Worst habit?
10. Do we know each other outside of LiveJournal?
11. What is your favorite sport?
12. Do you have a negative or optimistic attitude?
13. What would you do if you were stuck in an elevator with me?
14. Worst thing to ever happen to you?
15. Tell me one weird fact about you.
16. Do you have any pets?
17. Do you know how to do the Macarena?
18. What time is it where you are now?
19. Do you think clowns are cute or scary?
20. If you could change one thing about how you look, what would it be?
21. Would you be my partner in crime or my conscience?
22. What color eyes do you have?
23. Ever been arrested?
24. Bottle or draft?
25. If you won £10,000 today [$20,000 for the Americans], what would you do with it?
26. What kind of bubble gum do you prefer to chew?
27. What's your favorite bar to hang at?
28. Do you believe in ghosts?
29. Favorite thing to do in your spare time?
30. Do you swear a lot?
31. Biggest pet peeve?
32. In one word, how would you describe yourself?
33. In one word, how would you describe me?
34. Will you repost this so I can fill it out and do the same for you?

Here endeth the post. *pats ground*

By lunchtime tomorrow I'll be in Brisbane, settling into my room and meeting my fellow Clarionites. Since the thing is six weeks of intensive writing, workshopping, and did I mention writing?, what updates there'll be will probably be over at [livejournal.com profile] clarionfishy, where I'll be blogging the Clarion South experience. Feel free to friend it for the duration.

Before I leave, then, a meme nicked from [livejournal.com profile] active_apathy:

1. Open your mp3 library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, shortwave radio from Eastern Europe)
2. Put it on shuffle (or random or whatever else it gets called)
3. Press play
4. For every section of the movie, type the song that's playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool

Cut for meme )

And a few icons, too, because I hate sitting on the things once they're done:

Sondheim's Into the Woods:

(and one sans blood-spatter):

The usual applies - take, comment, credit, enjoy!

Memulated by [livejournal.com profile] waterfall8484:

Once tagged by this entry, the assignment is to write a blog entry of some kind with six random facts about yourself. Then, pick six of your friends and tag them; no tag backs. This explanation should be included.

Random fact number 1: I like visible produce from the garden, even if I don't always want to eat it (though I usually do).
So, whether picking peas and beans, digging up sunchokes or harvesting berries, it's all good. We had a large crop of garlic this year, and I've been braiding them together into 'Allo 'Allo-type French Peasant/Garlic Seller strings. It's a very peaceful task, best accompanied by loud blues music and the late morning sunlight filtering into the kitchen. So now there are ten braids of garlic hanging in the sunroom. Ten braids of garlic! Ahahaha! *lightning crash*

Random fact number 2: In case anyone's tuning in late, I majored in cultural studies (that's the one that's all Derrida/Foucault/Harraway/Deleuze&Guattari YEY!), and wrote my honours thesis on the discourses surrounding werewolves in contemporary fiction.
Fun times :). This means I will quite happily burble on about fanfiction, television shows and adverts as if they (gasp) have deeper meanings.

Random fact number 3: I'm a night owl.
Notwithstanding the years I was a rower (I *don't* miss the 4:45am starts!), or when I had a paper run.

Random fact number 4: (probably in conjunction with #3) A Philips-head screwdriver? Is totally my friend of choice when search the house for evil monsters in the wee hours.
Shut up! You know you heard something, too!

Random fact number 5: Clutter, ordered or dis-, is the name of the game.
I make notes, write lists, print things out... I'm pretty sure there's a desk in here, somewhere. But I know where everything is. (Except when I don't)

Random fact number 6: I write, mainly short stories, mainly fantasy with the odd science fiction piece thrown in. In three weeks' time I'll be in Brisbane at Clarion South (wheeee!); I'll be blogging that experience over at [livejournal.com profile] clarionfishy, in a vague attempt to keep Clarion and fandom/icons/random squee separate.

Random not-really-a-fact number 7: On second thought, let's not stay at six. It is a silly number.

Tagging? Meh. Oh, all right...

[livejournal.com profile] meganina
[livejournal.com profile] shaula82
[livejournal.com profile] active_apathy
[livejournal.com profile] secondsilk
[livejournal.com profile] schmillipede
[livejournal.com profile] phoenixthakhat
and since I added another number, Rach (if you figure out an lj-name, this could be your first post! *tempts*)

Plus anyone else who wants to do it, of course.

This post is brought to you by the letter 'B', courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] ozqueen.

This is how it goes:
1. Comment and I'll give you a letter.
2. List 10 things you love that begin with that letter.
3. Propagate the meme - hand out some letters of your own!

1. Books. My vice, my addiction. I have chosen books over food on more than one occasion, and an all-night read over sleep. I expect I'll do it again. One day I'll probably be able to build another house out of the books on my shelves (only that would be poor form, and anyway, what if I wanted to re-read one at the bottom?).

2. And speaking of books, British comedy series Black Books. I love the surreal humour. Please to be seeing icon :).

3. Baking. Brownies. Need I say more?

4. Beasts, fabulous and mythical. Basilisks, bunyips, barnacle geese and borometz, and the bread-and-butterfly.

5. The Black. Nothing like lying in the gutter on the ground looking at the stars, all shiny and peaceful-like. And speaking of space...

6. Benson, Arizona. A country song from the crazy 70s sci-fi movie Dark Star. Absolutely country (wailing guitar, boo hoo my love and I are separated) and absolutely science fictional (separated...by time dilation!). There's an mp3 of it available to download on that site.

Now the years pull us apart
I'm young and now you're old
But you're still in my heart
And the memory won't grow cold
I dream of times and spaces
I left far behind
Where we spent our last few days
Benson's on my mind...

7. Blood. Such a pretty colour. It keeps me warm and pinkish-beige instead of pasty-bleagh. Also, alive. Hooray for blood!

8. Bridges. Especially old ones, the half-glimpsed passageways seen from a train. Trolls and billy-goats, crossings and burning. Very myffic, bridges.

9. Bananas. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and even though the price has come down from $14/kg (!), it still isn't low enough for casual impulse-buying of these delicious yellow-cream treats. Other reasons to like bananas: Thirty Thousand Pounds of Bananas by Harry Chapin (I can upload it if anyone's interested); double (or indeed, single) entendre; the difficulty of how to *stop* spelling bananananananananana...

10. Blue-tongue lizards. Because although they'll hiss at you and stick out their (gasp) blue tongues, they're not evil bastards like brown snakes and won't try to kill you. Plus, they like bananas *wistful noise*.

Also, I just found out about The Game, and I've already lost three times. Dammit!

Avast, be ye land-lubber, wench or old sea-dog! The icon-making offer from a previous meme is still open to them as wants it. But here and now, it be time for

the survey meme! )

Tremble and be afeared, for the questions be deeply memetic, and circle like sharks 'neath the plank! Since it be the start of International Talk Like A Pirate Day (Australia time), feel free to answer in yer best piratical tongue.

Comment and I'll give you a letter. You name five songs (SONGS!) that start with that letter. If you'd like, upload each song to share with your friends list.

My letter, supplied by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] active_apathy, is M.

1. March of the Sinister Ducks (The Sinister Ducks)

What are they doing at night in the park?
Ducks, Ducks! Quack, Quack! Quack, Quack!
Think of them waddling about in the dark.
Ducks, Ducks! Quack, Quack! Quack, Quack!
Sneering and whispering and stealing your cars,
Reading pornography, smoking cigars!
Ducks, Ducks! Quack, Quack! Quack, Quack!
Ducks, Ducks! Quack, Quack! Quack, Quack!

2. Mad World (Gary Jules cover)

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very very
Mad world
Mad world

3. The Mercy Seat (Johnny Cash cover)

Into the mercy seat I climb
My head is shaved, my head is wired
And like a moth that tries
To enter the bright eye
I go shuffling out of life
Just to hide in death awhile
And anyway I never lied.

4. Mandelbrot Set (Jonathan Coulton)

Just take a point called Z in the complex plane
Let Z1 be Z squared plus C
And Z2 is Z1 squared plus C
And Z3 is Z2 squared plus C and so on
If the series of Z's should always stay
Close to Z and never trend away
That point is in the Mandelbrot Set

Mandelbrot Set, you’re a Rorschach Test on fire
You’re a day-glo pterodactyl
You’re a heart-shaped box of springs and wire
You’re one badass fucking fractal!
And you’re just in time to save the day
Sweeping all our fears away
You can change the world in a tiny way...

5. Moments in the Woods (Stephen Sondheim, Into the Woods)

Just a moment,
One peculiar passing moment...
Must it all be either less or more,
Either plain or grand?
Is it always 'or'?
Is it never 'and'?
That's what woods are for:
For those moments in the woods...

It's a sappy meme, I know, but I like it all the same:

If there is one or more people on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the Internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.

~

Well, why not? Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] secondsilk:

a. Comment and I'll pick one of your LJ interests and make you an icon.
b. You have absolutely no say in what I make.
c. If you do partake in it, please put this in your LJ so I can do the same for you.

Edited to add:
c is optional - I'll make you an icon regardless. That's just the meme doing its meme-y best to propagate.

The Day of Birth meme, ganked from [livejournal.com profile] rosewilliams:

Post three events, two births, and one death from your day of birth entry on Wikipedia (in this case, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_3).

Three events
350 - Roman usurper Nepotianus, of the Constantinian dynasty, proclaims himself Roman Emperor, entering Rome at the head of a group of gladiators. [Twenty-eight days later, he would be killed.]
1800 - U.S. President John Adams takes up residence in Washington, DC (in a tavern – the White House was not yet completed).
1989 - The government of China sends troops to force protesters out of Tiananmen Square after seven weeks of occupation.

Two births
1853 - William Matthew Flinders Petrie, English Egyptologist (d. 1942)
1930 - Marion Zimmer Bradley, American author (d. 1999)

One death
1899 - Johann Strauss II, Austrian composer (b. 1825)

The Flinders Petrie thing tickles me, because one of my relatives worked with him on several of his digs. Plus, seriation!
deepfishy: (Default)
(ganked from [livejournal.com profile] megpie71)

The meme is this: post an anti-war song in your LJ.

Now, there's a lot of anti-war songs out there, one for every conceivable mood, and some which aren't that great but have stuck around anyway because they're easy to sing. It's hard to play favourites.

My pick is Dick Gaughan's version of Pete Seeger's Waist Deep in the Big Muddy. It pretty much captures the feeling for me of being led into dangerous situations by ill-informed jingoism. Plus, rough Scottish accent that sounds like he's biting off every word through gritted teeth :).

The runners-up:

*For a song which captures the horror of war and its effect on the soldiers, I can't go past Eric Bogle's And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda.

*When feeling particularly malicious, Bob Dylan's Masters of War.

*That quintessential and very straightforward anti-war song, um... War (What is it good for?). Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong.

*And I have a soft spot for the Indigo Girls cover of another Seeger song, Letter to Eve (from whence my icon, which needs redoing). The accuracy of lyrics posted on the intarwebs leaves something to be desired, so my own attempt is behind the cut:

Letter to Eve )

So those are the song which are anti-war. But when I saw the meme I couldn't help reading it as anti-"war song". And then I just couldn't help myself:

Tom Lehrer is merciless in his mockery, whether it be nuclear testing, Christmas commercialism, or...protest songs. Intro and lyrics to
The Folk Song Army )

I'll be over here, in the Special Hell.
