Oh my goodness, this is the most deliciously, delightfully awesome sizzle reel I've ever seen. Better even than most actual tv previews or movie trailers. It also fills my yen for more caper/heist stories in speculative fiction, two genres that go together like chocolate and raspberries - tasty on their own, but also amazing in combination.

The show-to-be is Slingers, starring Sean Pertwee, Adrian Bower, Tom Mison, Margo Stilley, Haruka Abe, GUN and JUNIOR (how awesome is GUN? Just watch the video!). It's Oceans 11 IN SPACE!, or Cowboy Bebop, or Firefly, or Stainless Steel Rat, or...look, the trailer got three giggles and a lot of grins from me, it's visually stunning, and it has SEAN PERTWEE. Sean Pertwee awesoming it up as voiceover man and (I'm guessing) main antagonist. The "Slingers" category on writer Mike Atherton's blog is here, the production company's blurb (plus images) is here; both are worth checking out. And the sizzle reel is here:

Word is they've plotted it out to season three; here's hoping it takes off like a superpowered rocketship and blazes across the heavens in comet-like glory.

So. New Star Trek film. Good fun, no? But with a sad lack of more Uhuras being all actiony and smart and, idk, having lines of dialogue and not being absent/murdered mothers. (Also, lack of miniskirt uniforms on men, but I digress...) I mean, this is the 23rd century, a land Federation of sweets and joy and joy-ness! Women are presumably still ~50% of the human population, and Starfleet is the place to be! Where are they?

[livejournal.com profile] sloanesomething has made an awesome vid to Flight of the Conchords' Too Many Dicks on the Dance Floor addressing this lack of wimmins. It is 1) an incisive commentary on the disproportionate number of menfolk, and 2) hilarious1: Star Trek Dance Floor.

1Also catchy; this is Flight of the Conchords we're talking about. :)

Somewhere in my wanderings yesterday I came upon this absolutely gorgeous Firefly vid set to Classical Gas. Vids can be funny, critical, heartbreaking, whatever; this one reminded me of all the reasons I loved the show.

And that's a wonderful, shiny thing.

"They may wear jumpsuits with skull logos on them, and they may carry assault rifles, but really they're ordinary guys just like you and me — concerned about health insurance, pension plans, and making it through the workday without being shot, blown up, and/or karate-chopped by smug, oversexed Englishmen. Expendable is their story."

(One of my favourite parts is the cheerful recruitment ad: "Are you looking for a fast-paced career that makes the most of your talents while giving you valuable training for the future? A.R.A.C.H.N.I.D., the world's fifth-largest evil organisation, is looking for committed, energetic associates to join its team of security specialists. No experience is necessary; positions are available in many of the following areas...")

I've accumulated a veritable mountain of fics and such to pass on. Clearly this list will not grow any shorter if I wait to post, so here is a multimedia selection. (multimedia!)

Vids: 2 )

Webcomic: 1 )

Fanfic, complete: 10 )

Fanfic, long: 4 )

Fanfic, Works in Progress: 3 )

(I don't rec WiPs unless there's a good chance they'll be finished soon (or they're from a reliable author), so don't be put off by the "in progress" sign...)
