Belated blues wrap-up
Feb. 14th, 2008 12:18 amSunday was the last day of the festival, and I caught the acts on at the Railway Bowling Club (and was pleasantly surprised - next to the Lieder Theatre, it had the best sound quality of the various venues). Other than the whole "listening to live blues" thing, this festival has been a great incentive to go places in Goulburn I've never been before.
Black Market Music (an Australian blues/folk/roots record label) was having their showcase: the "Young Guns" (Tom Richardson, Jason Lowe and Jonno Zilber) kicking off their firstest ever tour together; The Hellboppers; Mojo Webb & Band; and Collard Greens and Gravy.
I came in near the end of the Young Guns' three-hour set (eep!), and they were still going strong. Was greatly amused to hear Tom Waits's Goin Out West again (Lightning Jack did it, too - guess a growly, thumping song is hard to go past). Talented guys in their own right, great together.
The Hellboppers (the reconstituted Bellhops) were v. rocking - my favourite song of theirs was "I Got Saved (from a life without alcohol or cigarettes)". Sat a bit close to the speakers, though :P.
Then, Mojo Webb & Band. How much love do I have for Mojo Webb? I'd never heard of him before, but for the entire hour and a half, bar exactly one (serious) song, I was grinning uncontrollably. The cheeky mischief in his voice, his lyrics, his whole performance was something to behold. And catchy! I've been humming his songs for the past three days.
And I couldn't think of a better way to finish the night than Collard Greens and Gravy, the whole reason I noticed the festival in the first place. I first found out about this group when they were on Spicks and Specks, and their treatment of "St. James Infirmary" remains my One True Version. What more can I say? They're awesome, personable, and played like champs despite it being 8pm on the last day of the festival (All-night partying? What partying?). Shortie remains the most extraordinary sight on drums ever (though Rob Eyers came a close second). If you ever get a chance to see them live, GO!
The end. I'm in the process of culling for the mix (so many songs and artists made of win!), so expect that in the next week or so.
