Nov. 1st, 2009 03:15 pmAh, November. The fabled season of NaNoWriMo! (which always, always coincides with Dread Essay Deathmarch time)
I'm not doing an official NaNo this year, but I have been playing around with Dr Wicked's most excellent Write or Die Desktop Edition for the DED. Not only does it feature warring progress bars for words written versus the stopwatch, but it requires no internet connection, thus making it vastly superior to the online version by removing the shiny distractinator from the equation.
In terms of creating writing rituals, having a wordcount and time goal mediated by this ingeniously simple software works for me. It's remarkably hard to begrudge it "just five minutes..." even at the end of the longest day :). Definitely worth shelling out US$10 (and hey, strong Aussie dollar - the perfect time to buy!).
It's not Write Club, but it's the next best thing when the closest writer buddies are far, far away (and if it was HAL yelling at you to keep writing).
