Goo-Goor-Gaga
Jul. 10th, 2007 05:29 pmJust spent the last hour or so painstakingly clipping strands of thin plastic mesh with scissors to free a kookaburra that had gotten tangled. It was very well-behaved, poor thing - didn't try to peck or flap around, just let itself be held while I did the job. Absolutely beautiful birds. And, of course, well-known as Eaters of Snakes, so they are very welcome here.
No photos, I'm afraid - this was strictly a rescue mission. I've seen a pair of them hunting in the orchard (presumably this was one of them, since they form permanent pairs and take an age raising their kids), so maybe I'll get another chance. Particularly if they've decided this is Their Place. :)
ETA: for the non-Australians, Goo-Goor-Gaga the kookaburra heralds the dawn, as described in the Dreamtime story of How the Sun Was Made.
