In which my isthmus twinges
Apr. 3rd, 2005 03:12 pmWell, Karol Jozef Wojtyla has officially died. I'm not Catholic, but it seemed a churlish reason not to note the man's passing.
I don't take much notice of portents, but there's been a lot of death in this year already. I kind of wonder what it means for the rest of the year, if it bodes ill. (I don't think good news can bode; it probably presages, or something)
When I was young, no one died. The "world events" I remember from my childhood aren't tied up in death and tragedy (though how this happened when the Gulf War went on, I don't know). These past few years I've been noticing the passing of certain people - mainly actors, sometimes writers, singers, or other folk - and, well, feeling their loss. No man is an island, et cetera; but maybe it takes a while to realise you're connected to the mainland.
